Grief is our body's normal, heartfelt response to significant emotional loss of any kind. There are multiple pathways through grief, each one individual and unique.
Any major loss in life can produce the range of emotions we call grief:
- End of relationship
- Compromise of physical and/or mental health
- Career change, job loss, retirement
- Empty nest
- Moving, immigration
- Coming out
- and many others...
When we allow our grief to run its natural course, when we embrace rather than resist it, grief can be experienced as an emotional cleansing, a working through, a coming-to-terms with, a reconnection, a reconciliation, and the gathering of strength and skills to move forward through our loss. In our natural experience of grief, there is an intrinsic process of recovery.
Though grief is a normal and necessary part of working through loss, common misconceptions inform us that our feelings are abnormal, unnatural, and often unwelcome.
- Time heals all wounds
- Don't feel bad
- Keep busy
- Replace the loss
- Grieve alone
Many grievers feel a sense of isolation and a lingering sense of incompleteness. Our grief feels unresolved. Words have gone unspoken. Feelings have not been shared.
Over a lifetime of losses, the pain of unresolved grief can be cumulative, and can have a lifelong negative impact on our health, well being, and capacity for happiness.
In grief counselling, I will walk with you through your unique story, acknowledge your pain, and help you to recover your natural ability to heal. Together, we will create a safe environment in which to:
- Look at your beliefs and behaviours around dealing with loss
- Look at how your losses have impacted your life, your relationships, and your sense of self
- Work toward completing the undelivered and unresolved communications in your relationships
- Work through the pain associated with your loss
As we journey through your grief story, we will work through your pain and isolation, releasing the past, reconnecting to your present, and reorienting to your future.
In reclaiming those parts of ourselves that have been wounded by our losses, we can recover our natural resilience, to live and love as fully as possible.
